YouTube Tuesday: No Joy

I didn't realize until today that Joyland had closed.

Not that I'm surprised. I just haven't thought about Joyland Amusement Park one way or another in ages. As a kid, my parents took us there two or three times, making the hour's trip from out hamlet to the city of Wichita for a diversion of bumper cars, Ferris wheels and carnival games (as I recall, I wasn't old enough to go on the roller coaster).

Anyway, as this video shows, the amusement park has undergone significant decay since it closed nearly 10 years ago.

Much like our culture in general.

  1. When I was about 6 0r 7 we moved from Coffeyville, KS to Mulvane, KS where we lived for about a year while my dad worked first at Beechcraft and then Boeing.

I remember Joyland. It was the very first amusement park I had ever been to.

As far as I was concerned it was exactly the same as Disneyland. No difference.

Memories. Like the corners of my mind. Misty water-colored memories. :: sigh ::

  2. I see that video and I think "that would be a great set location for a horror flick."

  3. We had a park called "Chain of Rocks" along the Mississippi, which all the schools used for their school picnics. Then Six Flags came along, "poof!" Chain of Rocks closed. Sad, really.

    Cheers.
